Ground truth positioning paths are a great way to test and analyze positioning performance offline. A ground truth positioning path means that you are walking and recording a known path, which you have planned and marked using the waypoints. Testing positioning with the recorded ground truth path data can then be used offline to analyze and debug the positioning performance and issues using the trace id generated by the MapCreator. The trace id uniquely identifies the ground truth path and its data.

If you have positioning performance issues and you are planning to contact IndoorAtlas support,
include always a ground truth path's trace id in your communication – this enables our team to debug your deployment.

To record a ground truth positioning path and to generate a trace id follow the steps below:

  • Open the positioning view in MapCreator
  • Wait until the floor plan list has been loaded
  • Ensure from settings that diagnostic mode is enabled – it should be enabled by default
  • Place waypoints at the turning points along the ground truth path. Do this for each floor you are planning to include in the ground truth path
  • Recommended Ground Truth route length 30m to 500m.

  • Start positioning
  • Follow the ground truth path and check into the waypoints. Note: you need to tap the correct target waypoint to select it before you can check into it.
  • At the end of the path, click the share trace id icon and copy and save the trace id.
Note: do not stop the positioning and start a new positioning session before saving the trace id – a new positioning session will generate a new trace id that overwrites the previous one.
  • Open the trace id in the session viewer at app.indooratlas.com

When the trace id is opened in the session viewer, the ground truth path is shown with the positioning estimates which help to analyze and debug potential positioning performance issues.
